About Stumptown Stages

MISSION:

Stumptown Stages is dedicated to the production of musicals and the development of original musicals, collaborating with local performing/visual artists, designers, musicians, playwrights, composers, lyricists, directors and choreographers and building a sense of community by providing arts education, outreach programming and a broad spectrum of theatrical experiences for a wide and diverse audience.

HISTORY:

In 2005 Kirk Mouser an equity actor/singer, came to Portland and noticed that a city the size of Portland did not have more theatre companies at the local level dedicated to seasons of musical theatre. Portland was on the cusp of the still current artistic growth period and many new young artists and musicians were discovering the creative possibilities Portland offered and bringing their energies to the city.

Wanting to learn from the theatre community, artistic directors, performers and musicians were gathered for a series of meetings to see if there would be support for such a venture. Through these meetings came stories of the pitfalls and successes of starting a theatre company. Those who gathered gave good advice and were welcoming and supportive. They all agreed that there was a place and certainly a need for another musical company in the city of Portland. Thus was born Stumptown Stages whose namesake "Stumptown" was a quirky and endearing nickname for the City of Portland.

After three successful seasons under Artistic Director, Kirk Mouser, and our Board of Directors, Stumptown begins its fourth season collaborating with Jefferson High at the Robert Ford Auditorium. Fundraising, Sponsorships and grant writing are on going projects as Stumptown Stages continues in its quest to produce quality musical theatre and renovate its new home at Jefferson High's Robert Ford Auditorium.
